The TIPS study is comparing the effectiveness of two different interventions given around the time of surgery for ovarian cancer to see if they improve the time needed to recover after surgery.
Led by ANZGOG in collaboration with the NHMRC CTC, the trial successfully recruited its target of 47 patients.
“Despite the challenges of recruiting to clinical trials during the Covid pandemic (many sites were closed to recruitment for over a year) AND the challenges of recruiting to a surgical trial, the TIPS trial investigators managed to recruit over 40 patients to this pilot study investigating whether two specific individual interventions (carbohydrate loading and use of adjunct pain medication) can reduce the time to recover from major ovarian cancer surgery. Whilst the trial closed prior to full recruitment due to drug supply issues, we are confident that there will be sufficient data from this pilot study to inform clinical practice and to form a basis for future larger trials across several cancer types.“
